On the rare occasion you get a superhorn in first position, you can use it when the blue shell hovers over you. This will break the blue shell.
Before the blue shell hits you, you can run into a banana on the track which earns a racer invisibility frames. Click Here to find out more about invisibility frames! The banana sends you spinning forward whereas the blue shell stops you completely and sends you into the air.

Driving off the track: The blue shell can only follow you until you get picked up by Lakitu, at which point it will make a guess as to where you are. So if you drive off the track and get picked up by Lakitu, the blue shell might not find you and the explosion will randomly lag onto the track — potentially spinning out other racers. (NOTE: If somebody is trying to help you by shocking you right before the blue shell hits you, then you might also be able to dodge the shock because the shock cannot hit you while being picked up by Lakitu!
