The tips below are all for 150cc (which is the mode used for online) and outward drifting bikes (which is how most people play the game in online races).

Do not try to hit other players with your own protection items, hitting someone else only makes you advance one spot, but loosing your defense item and then getting hit could make you drop up to eight spots
Don’t try to pass someone who has a triple item (unless it’s mushrooms), because they could easily target you with the items, or you could accidentally bump into the items). However, if you have a boo, a star a bullet, or a triple item of your own, it should be fine. (a shock would also work, as you could shock them and they would lose their items).
