How to race
Steer
Move the left joystick to steer. You do not need to hold forward on the joystick to move forward.
Use the “A” button to accelerate and move forward.
Use the “B” button to slow down or reverse.
Use the “X” button to look behind you. This function is especially important because it allows you to see which side of the road the Blue Shell is traveling on so you can get out of its way — unless you are in first place, in which case the Blue Shell will move to hit you anyway. For tips on how to avoid getting Blue Shelled, click here. But if you’re new, don’t worry about this yet.
Using Items
Use the “L” or “ZL” button to use items. Click here if you want to know what each item does.
Press and hold the “R” or “ZR” button to drift. You will drift in the direction you’re steering. If you tap the “R” or “ZR” button , you do a hop (this is super important for re-aligning after drifts)
What is Drifting? If you begin a drift, your kart will slide in the direction you’re pushing the joystick. Over time you will build up sparks. If you release the drift after the sparks appear, you will get a mini turbo that will make your kart go faster for a short period of time. Also, if used correctly, drifting can help you get around turns faster, and is the main mechanic of this game.
The longer you hold the drift without releasing will result in sparks changing color from (blue, to orange, to purple) with each one giving you a stronger speed boost that lasts longer. These are also referred to as mini-turbo, super-mini-turbo, and ultra-mini-turbo.
All karts (and kart-like vehicles) will slide around turns while drifting. However, instead of sliding, inward drift bikes (Yoshi Bike, Rocket Bike, Sport Bike, the Blue Master Cycle, and Comet Bike) will first swerve out, and then turn very sharply into the turn. Inward drifting bikes will also build up sparks and speed boost exactly the same as outward drifting vehicles.
