Online format (for all game modes)
Yours and everyone else’s Miis will be shown standing on the earth. You will be able to select one out of the three course options that will appear at the top of the screen, or you could select the one random course if you don’t like your other opinions. Everyone else will pick make a course selection, and from those a course will be randomly picked.
While you’re waiting for the courses to be picked, you can press the Y button to change your vehicle combo, or the X button to talk, while the button symbols are still visible at the bottom left corner of the screen (you could also leave the group at this time). There is no voice chat, or discord like chat, you only get a small selection of phrases:

Online Worldwide (VS Race)
This is the most common way to play online; you will race against up-to 11 other players from around the world, you will start off with 1000 VR (versus or virtual rating) at this level most players are new to the game. Typically, you will gain between 5VR and 25VR for getting in the top 6, and you will lose anywhere from 1VR to 12 VR for getting in the bottom 6.
As you get more VR, you will get better, and so will your competition. At 5000 VR you will start to lose more VR for bad placements, and this will continue until you get to around 20000 VR where you will lose between 2 and 36 VR for bad placements ):
You will almost always be matched with other players around your skill level, so don’t worry about getting destroyed by players way better than you
If you goof around or don’t drive, you will be disconnected. When this happens, a notification will appear saying “A communication error has occurred” and you will lose around same VR as you would for getting last.
I won’t be going into online battles; I just don’t play them. But here’s some very basic information:
You will also gain BR (Battle rating) for battle mode, this will not affect your VR. You start off with 1000 BR, and it works the same way as VR.
The type of Battle Mode will be randomized for every race. And instead of playing race courses, you will play battle maps.
Regional Race: (VS Race)
You only race against other players from your region (other than that, it works the same as online wordwides). Because this is a much smaller selection of players to choose from you often have a few really high VR players and some that are just starting out. Note: Some high VR players in regional races do not have the skill to match their VR. So, you can usually do good and beat these “fake” VR players (their still good, but they probably just find 1000 VR rooms and that’s why their VR doesn’t match their skill)
Friend Rooms:
If you go to online play and select “Friends” you will see a list of all your friends, you can join one by selecting them and joining their room. Below your actual friends there will be a list of the players you recently played against.
In this format you can also play privately with your online friends! If you look at the top of the screen you will see something that says “Create a room” if you select this, you will create a private room that only your friends can join! You will not gain or lose any VR, but you will still get points, they will be deleted after the room ends, however. Your friends’ friends can join them in your friend room, even if you aren’t friends with them 
your room will also have a temporary room ID, it will only last as long as the room is active, (which will close after everyone leaves).
Tournaments (Different from competitive events)
About Tournaments (Find them at the bottom of the online race mode menu)
The name is misleading; it sounds like Tournaments are for hard core racers and not casuals!
Tournaments are actually a bunch of custom rooms with specific rules–created by random players! They include VS races and battle mode! The tournaments work similar to private friend rooms; you will get points that don’t affect your VR, but unlike friend rooms, your score will be kept and put on that day’s “leaderboard.” You can see the leaderboard by selecting it on the bottom right (above it you can see “join” the Tournament, to the left you can see the Tournament’s rules and when it’s active, and below it you can see how many players have joined it that day).
Casual players usually hang out in Tournaments.
At the top of the screen, you can search for tournaments either by “Active tournaments,” “Tournament type,” or “Tournament ID.” You can also “Create a Tournament”.
You can create your own tournament! Give it completely random rules or you could give it crazy items! There is so much you can do with it–get creative!
